Bringing Heart Surgery Home
  • Bringing Heart Surgery to Anne Arundel Medical Center

AAMC is the third busiest medical center in Maryland as measured by the number of patients it cares for each year. Nationally recognized in heart care, our specialists perform thousands of cardiac-related procedures every year. AAMC offers a wide range of quality heart services, from prevention and diagnosis of heart disease to interventional cardiology procedures and rehabilitation. The missing link is heart surgery.

In 2015, AAMC filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) to gain approval to develop a cardiac surgery program at the hospital. After five years of working through the regulatory approvals and court system, AAMC is now bringing a renowned cardiac surgeon to AAMC to establish our cardiac surgery program.

We are pleased to announce that Daniel C. Lee, MD will serve as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at AAMC beginning July 1, 2020. With Dr. Lee’s guidance and oversight, we will begin the final phase of planning and preparation for our cardiac surgery program. Dr. Lee will immediately begin a robust hiring process to fill critical roles, including nursing staff, as well as determine equipment needs, create a training program, and much more.

With Dr. Lee’s leadership, we plan to begin performing cardiac surgery at AAMC before the end of 2020. This cardiac surgery program will allow us to provide the full continuum of cardiac services to our community. We will no longer have to transfer hundreds of AAMC patients to other programs outside of our region each year. This is a true win for our patients, their families and the community!
