• Mastery In General Surgery Fellowship Program

  • Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) is proud to be the only hospital in Maryland offering one of the latest developments in advanced surgical training: the Mastery In General Surgery Fellowship program. This program is tailored to new surgeons leaving residency and entering the practice of general surgery. For the majority of the year, you will work as a member of our acute care surgery team, focusing on emergency surgery and wound care, while also gaining endosurgical and endoscopic skills through rotations in minimally invasive surgery and bariatrics. Independent electives in thoracic surgery, critical care, oncology, vascular surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology are offered to help you customize your training to your career focus.

The Mastery In General Surgery Fellowship program is driven by the leadership of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and is designed to support your move to independent practice through:

    • Hands-on learning tailored to your individual needs
    • Independence and autonomy in clinical decision making
    • Practical general surgery experience under the guidance of notable practicing surgeons
    • One year, paid staff appointments at institutions accredited by ACS
    • Exposure to important elements of practice management

  • Your year-long Mastery in General Surgery Fellowship training will be roughly divided into three-month intervals. Initially, all of your work will be closely overseen. At the end of each three-month period, your progress will be reviewed and more independent work will be given based on your assessment. By the final months, you will have the ability to perform independent emergency surgery services with backup only as needed. Your program will close with an overall review and debrief of your experience.

You will spend most of your time on AAMC’s main hospital campus as part of our acute care surgery team, rotating to a rural site (to be determined) for a portion of your time, along with other external sites as needed to gain appropriate experience and exposure.

As a Mastery in General Surgery fellow, you will participate in all surgical-related conferences, including morbidity and mortality, quality, grand rounds, and specialty conferences based on your professional interests.

Applications for the Mastery in General Surgery Fellowship must be submitted through the American College of Surgeons (ACS).  To apply, applicants must log onto the American College of Surgeons website.
