Nurses commonly rate staffing and scheduling as elements that are critical to the profession. Inconsistent scheduling and staffing patterns between nursing units is dissatisfying and frustrating to nurses. Nurses desire to have safe staffing standards based on patient acuity and organization specific guidelines. Nurses also desire to have schedules that enhance work-life balance. Nurses want clear, written guidelines that are applied consistently and fairly by all. Nurses who are engaged in developing staffing and scheduling guidelines feel empowered to make recommendations that lead to changes that improve their satisfaction, patient care and work-life balance. Our goal is to create consistent staffing and scheduling practices and guidelines across all nursing units that result in improved nursing satisfaction, greater work-life balance and retention.
