Lung Scans (Pulmonary CT)

Following the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) criteria, this low-dose CT scan provides the best way to detect lung cancer before symptoms appear. If you are a current or former smoker between ages 55 and 74, talk to your doctor to see if you may benefit from screening.

Few or no symptoms occur in the early stages of lung cancer. It is the number one cause of cancer deaths in the US. Recent studies have shown that low-dose CT scans are two-and-a-half times more effective than general x-rays at finding lung abnormalities. Abnormality does not necessarily mean cancer.

Best images: At AADI you have much more than leading-edge technology and superior low-dose CT images. Lung scans at AADI are performed by highly skilled, compassionate technologists. All positive results will be evaluated by a team of experts which includes radiologists, pulmonologists, surgeons and oncologists. Follow-up for those with a positive screening CT will be scheduled to discuss results and create your a personalized treatment plan. Special nurse navigators and social workers also help provide support and coordinate your care.

The facts: If you smoke or are a former smoker, you are 10 to 20 times more likely to get lung cancer than a non-smoker. AAMC’s Lung Cancer Screening Program may detect lung cancer in the early stages when it is most treatable.

Preparing: If you are between the ages of 55 and 74 and smoke or have a history of smoking in the last 15 years, you may be eligible. The Lung Cancer Screening Program at AAMC follows the National Lung Screening Trial criteria. To be eligible, participants must be considered either a one pack a day smoker for 30 years, 2 packs per day for 15 years, or 4 packs per day for 7 to 8 years.
